A Jyotirlinga or Jyotirling or Jyotirlingam is a shrine where Lord Shiva, an aspect of God in Hinduism is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlingam or "Lingam of light." There are twelve traditional Jyotirlinga shrines in India.

મલ્લિકાર્જુન જ્યોતિર્લિંગ
કોઈ પણ તપસ્વીનાં તપથી પ્રસન્ન થઈને શિવજી અહીં પ્રગટ્યા નથી. અહીં તો શિવજી પોતાની ઈચ્છાથી જ અને પોતાના સ્વાર્થ ખાતર જ જ્યોતિર્લિંગના રૂપમાં અહીં સ્થિત થયા છે ! એકવાર ભગવાન શંકરજીના બે પુત્રો ગણેશજી અને કાર્તિકેય – સ્વામી ઝઘડી પડ્યા. ગણેશજી કહે કે મારાં લગ્ન પહેલાં થવાં જોઈએ અને કાર્તિકેયજી કહે કે મારાં. વાત જિદ્દે ચડી. અંતે શંકરજીએ રસ્તો કાઢ્યો કે પૃથ્વીની પરિક્રમા કરીને જે પહેલો પાછો આવે, તેનાં લગ્ન પહેલાં થશે ! આ સાંભળતાં જ જરાય સમય ગુમાવ્યા વગર કાર્તિકેયસ્વામી તો પૃથ્વીની પરિક્રમાએ દોડી નીકળ્યા. પણ ગણેશજીનો સ્થૂળકાય, કાર્તિકેયસ્વામીની ઝડપે તો એ ક્યાંથી દોડી શકે ! પણ ગણેશજી ચતુર ઘણા. તેમણે તો પોતાનાં માતા- પિતા પાર્વતીજી અને શિવજીને આસન પર બેસાડ્યાં, પૂજન કર્યું, તે બન્‍ને ફરતી સાત પ્રદક્ષિ‍ણા કરી અને વંદન કર્યાં. અર્થાત્ માતા - પિતાનું પૂજન અને પરિક્રમા જે કરે છે, તેને પૃથ્વી પરનાં તમામ ફળની પ્રાપ્તિ નિશ્ચિત રૂપે મળે છે. આથી ગણેશજીને પૃથ્વીની પરિક્રમા કર્યાનો અધિકાર પ્રાપ્‍ત થઈ ગયો !

કાર્તિકેયસ્વામી પ્રદક્ષિ‍ણા પૂર્ણ કરીને પરત આવે તે પહેલાં તો વિશ્વરૂપ પ્રજાપતિની બે કન્યાઓ સિદ્ધિ અને બુદ્ધિ સાથે ગણશેજીના લગ્ન થઈ ચૂક્યાં હતાં. એટલું જ નહીં પણ તે બંન્‍નેએ અનુક્રમે ક્ષેમ અને લાભ નામના પુત્રરત્નોને જન્મ પણ આપ્‍યો હતો. પૃથ્વીની પ્રદક્ષિ‍ણા પૂરી કરીને કાર્તિકેયસ્વામી જ્યારે પાછા ફર્યા, તે ઊકળી ઊઠ્યા અને સંસ્કાર મુજબ માતા – પિતાનાં ચરણસ્પર્શ કરીને તરત જ રિસાઈને શ્રીશૈલ પર્વત પર ભાગી ગયા. પાર્વતીજી અને શિવજીને પુત્રવિયોગ મનોમન ખૂબ સતાવવા લાગ્યો. તેઓથી વધુ સમય પુત્રવિયોગ સહી ન શકાયો. આથી શિવજીએ પોતે જ શ્રીશૈલ પર્વત પર જઈને કાર્તિકેયસ્વામીને મનાવવા અને તેમને પાછા લઈ આવવાનો નિર્ધાર કર્યો. મહાદેવજી અને પાર્વતીજી શ્રીશૈલ પર્વત પર ગયાં. પરંતુ તેમના આવવાની જાણ થતાં જ કાર્તિકેયસ્વામી દૂરના બીજા સ્થળે ચાલ્યા ગયા. પોતાના પ્રિય પુત્રને જોવાની ફળી નહીં, એટલે કાર્તિકેયજીનાં દર્શનની આશામાં ભગવાન શંકર અહીં જ્યોતિર્લિંગના રૂપમાં સ્થિત થયા. આ જ્યોતિર્લિંગની સંભાળ લેવાવાળું કે પૂજન કરવાવાળું આ વેરાન પર્વત પર કોઈ ન હતું, કેટલાંય વર્ષોનાં વહાણાં વીતી ગયાં. એવામાં આ પર્વતની તળેટીના વિશાળ જંગલમાં ચંદ્રગુપ્‍ત નામે એક રાજા રાજ્ય કરતો હતો. તેને ચંદ્રાવતી નામની એક અતિ સ્વરૂપવાન કુંવરી હતી. પણ શિવભક્તિમાં ખોવાયેલી આ ચંદ્રાવતી લગ્ન કરવા જ ઈચ્છતી ન હતી. લગ્ન માટેના પોતાના માતા – પિતાના દુરાગ્રહથી કંટાળીને એક દિવસ ચંદ્રાવતી રાજ્યની જાહોજહાલી છોડીને જંગલમાં નાસી ગઈ. અંતે શ્રીશૈલ પર્વત પર તે આવી પહોંચી. એક દિવસ તેણે જોયું કે એક ગાય હંમેશા એક ખાસ જગ્યાએ તેના આંચળમાંથી જમીન ઉપર દૂધ રેડતી હતી. કુતૂહલથી એક દિવસે ચંદ્રાવતીએ એ જગ્યા ખોદી, તો તેને આ જ્યોતિર્લિંગનાં દર્શન થયાં.

Mallikarjun Temple in Andhra pradeshMallikarjun Temple is situated on Shri Shaila Mountain by the banks of the Patal Ganga, Krishna River in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. Also known as Kailash of the South, Mallikarjuna constitutes one of the 12 Jyotirlingam shrines of Shiva and is one of the greatest Shaivaite shrines in India. The presiding deities of Mallikarjuna Temple are Mallikarjuna (Shiva) and Bhramaramba (Devi). Every year there is a fair organized on account of Mahashivratri.

Legend of Mallikarjun Jyotirlinga
According to Shiva Purana, when Lord Ganesh was married of before his Kartikeya, and because of this brother Kartikeya became angry. Despite being stopped and consoled by his parents Shiv-Parvati, Kartikeya went away to the Kraunch Mountain. Even the Gods went and tried consoling Kartikeya but all their efforts were in vain. Because of this incident Shiv-Parvati were very sad and both decided that they would themselves go to Kraunch Mountain. However, when Kartikeya came to know that his parents have arrived, he went away. Eventually Lord Shiva assumed the form of Jyotirlinga and resided on that mountain by the name of Mallikarjuna. Mallika means Parvati, while Arjuna is another name of Shiva. In this way both Shiva and Parvati came to reside in this linga. It is said that by merely seeing the tip of mountain one is emancipated from all his sins and worries. The person becomes free from the vicious cycle of life and death.

Architecture of Mallikarjun Temple
The architecture of the ancient Mallikarjun Temple is very beautiful and intricate. The temple has fort like walls, towers and a rich endowment of sculptural work. The huge temple is built in the Dravidian style with lofty towers and sprawling courtyards and is considered to be one of the finest specimens of Vijayanagar architecture. Temple of Tripurantakam, Siddavatam, Alampura and Umamaheswaram located in the vicinity of Mallikarjuna Jyotirlina are considered to be the four gateways to Sri Sailam.

Bhramaramba Shrine
Located adjacent to the Mallikarjun Temple is a shrine dedicated to Goddess Jagdamba who is known as Bhramaramba here. The Bhramaramba shrine is considered to be of great significance. Legend has it that Durga is said to have assumed the shape of a bee and worshipped Shiva here, and chose this place as her abode.
